Özet:

Date palm, a member of the family Palmae, is a kind of plant with a tall stock, green leaves and sweet fruit, which grows in tropical regions, mild temperate zones and especially in deserts. Its fruit is considerably rich in fat, carbohydrates and proteins compared to many legumes. Beyond being an ordinary food, it ranks first among the preferred foodstuffs as it is beneficial for health. Dates, leather and camels have been essential in the everyday lives of Arabs, whose way of life has become intermingled with dates due to the geographical and ecological conditions of their region. Having domesticated the camel and thus become able to roam the peninsula comfortably, Arabs have maintained close contact with date palm for centuries; because the date was nourishing and remained fresh for a long time, the plant was successful in adapting to the oases of the peninsula, and lumber made from its stock could be utilised to numerous ends. As the date highly influenced life in the peninsula, Risālas and books concerning the cultivation, harvesting and use of dates have been copyrighted from the beginning. Since it has had a serious impact on life on the peninsula, treatises and books have been written on the cultivation, harvesting and use of dates since the early periods. In this article, after introducing the works written specifically on dates and the books containing detailed information about dates among the first-period sources, information will be given about the Date Palm Treatise attributed to Ibn Wahshiyya, who is thought to have lived in the 4th century. The study, which is one of the first in its field, will thus be brought together with the readers, and the importance of date for Arabs will once again be demonstrated. Data on the study will be taken from primary sources, and actual health-related findings will also be used.
