Özet:

This study examines the royalist pamphlet Les Represailles 1798, allegedly written by an author named Louis Tannenbroy and published in Istanbul, within the context of anti-French propaganda during the Napoleonic Wars. The pamphlet, which condemns Napoleons invasion of Egypt and the radicalism of the French Revolution, uses fabricated documents attributed to a British diplomat in Istanbul and a Mamluk Bey to refute Napoleons claims of liberating Egypt. Although press historian Orhan Koloğlu suggests that such counter-revolutionary pamphlets were circulated in Istanbul by Austrian and British embassies during the French Revolution, it appears that no copies of them have survived to the present day. This article discusses whether Les Represailles could be one of these lost periodicals. The pamphlets focus on the Congress of Rastatt 1797-1799 and its appeals to German princes indicate that the author was likely a German royalist. The Constantinople imprint appears to be a fictitious label used to evade censorship or enhance credibility. Stylistically, the pamphlet employs satire to dismantle Napoleons propaganda, mocking his Egyptian proclamation and exposing French hypocrisy. Its themes align with broader European Black Legend narratives that portrayed Napoleon as a tyrant. Ultimately, Les Represailles exemplifies the transnational propaganda wars of the period, in which fabricated documents and fictitious imprints were used to influence public opinion. The study emphasizes the importance of source criticism in press history and demonstrates how diplomatic and ideological rivalries shaped the dissemination of information in the late 18th century.
