Özet:

Considered one of the founders of modern architecture, Adolf Loos decided to settle in Paris from Vienna in 1922 and started to practice his architectural works here, while Josephine Baker came to France for a Paris tour and settled here after about three years. As foreigners, these two important figures lived in the same city in the same years and made significant contributions to the Paris of the period. Although there is no evidence that these two names are acquainted, both the articles written by Loos ex-wife Claire Beck Loos and the house Loos designed for Baker contain various interpretations of the relationship between the two. Although it is not known whether Josephine Baker asked Adolf Loos to design a residence, Loos designed a residence for Baker in 1928, but this residence was not realized. The Baker House has been frequently discussed and written by architectural historians in terms of its space and plan, its façade and the meanings it contains. Based on these assumptions, the article aims to read Josephine Baker House in line with the ideas and writings of Adolf Loos, considering the concept of gender and gender theories. Within this reading, the effects of the masculine point of view of the period were discussed within the scope of Adolf Loos thoughts and the Baker House was examined.
