Özet:

In Central Anatolian Abdals, women are not associated with music in any way in the public sphere; therefore, music in this community is entirely mens work. The instruments, timbre, style, texture, circulation of meaning and repertoire, which are the identity components of Central Anatolian Abdal music, are the product of the fact that women are nowhere in this music and that this music is only mens music. In other words, even if Abdal women had been involved in this music only through vocal performances, the above-mentioned identity components of this music would have been completely different. This means that the music in question would have a very different quality from its current form. For the Abdals of Central Anatolia, music and musicianship is both the most important source of livelihood and a very important part of Abdal identity. However, since half of the Abdal population, women, have no relation with music and musicianship and this reality is one of the most important dynamics determining the current state of Central Anatolian Abdal music, the theoretical framework of the study is based on the concept of gender. This study aims to reveal the relationship between gender and music among the Abdals of Central Anatolia and explain how gender determines the identity of music. It is based on the interpretation of qualitative data obtained from participant observation, interviews, and experiences in anthropological fieldwork conducted among the Abdals of Central Anatolia, as well as information obtained from literature reviews, from an ethnomusicological perspective.
