Özet:

Origin which can be traced back to the 3rd century BC and is the ancestor of modern polo, is a traditional equestrian game that originated in Central Asia and spread to all Turkish geographies and almost all of the Eastern civilisation. The game, which is based on the principle of scoring points by reaching the ball, which is one of the main tools of the game, to a certain target, the goal, with sticks called as çevgen, was learned in India by the British in the 19th century, transformed into a modern sports branch and spread all over the world under the name of polo. The game, which was traditionally played by the Turkic peoples of Central Asia and Tajiks until the 1980s, has survived to the present day without interruption in Azerbaijan. In 2013, the game was registered in the SOKÜM list on behalf of Azerbaijan, and in 2019, the game started to be played again in Turkey after hundreds of years. Following the 1st World Chovken Championship held in Baku in 2023, the game is rapidly progressing towards becoming a global sports branch by preserving its traditional essence under the umbrella of the International Chovken Federation, which was established in 2024, headquartered in Baku and currently attended by 53 country representatives. In this study, the origin, spread and change of the game, as well as its current situation and future, are explored and analysed.
