Özet:

With the Republic, the social status of women was also given importance within the scope of modernization policies. In this sense, various organizations were organized for women. Beauty contests, one of these organizations, appear as important organizations that evaluate womens physical characteristics, talents and personalities. The Turkish Beauty Contest organized by Cumhuriyet newspaper on January 12, 1930 is one of these events. The winner of this contest was Ms. Mübeccel Namık, the Beauty Queen. Ms. Mübeccel Namık represented Turkey in beauty contests on a global scale in Europe and the world. She was the first Turkish woman to represent Turkey in the European Beauty Contest organized in Paris on February 5, 1930. Her participation in this contest was described as a millî bir vazife. She also participated in the World Beauty Contest held in Brazil on September 7, 1930. Another characteristic that made Ms. Mübeccel Namık stand out was her athletic identity. As a matter of fact, in an interview she gave after winning the Miss Turkey Contest, she revealed this aspect by saying, Ben güzelliğimi doğrudan doğruya spora medyunum. Ms. Mübeccel stands out as a pioneering figure at a time when womens active role in sports was limited. In her speeches, she emphasized the individual and social functions of sports. As a result, this study examines Ms. Mübeccels lifestyle, her experiences in national and international beauty competitions, as well as her athlete identity. In doing so, especially archival documents, periodicals of the period and research works have been utilized. In addition, an interview with Ms. Mübeccel Namık conducted by the Spanish magazine Estampa was also evaluated. Ms. Mübeccels admiration for Western culture and her efforts to balance her feelings in the process of modernization with her own cultural habits, as well as the difficulties experienced by a young woman in the process of adapting to international expectations are among the topics that draw attention in this news article. In the light of these sources and on the basis of qualitative research method, an attempt has been made to reveal the subject.
