Özet:

The phenomenon of madness is the subject of this study. The aim of the study is to identify the main reasons why mad individuals are more visible in certain locations. There are mad individuals who rarely leave the vicinity of Kapu Mosque and Aziziye Mosque in Konya Bedesten Bazaar. The frequency of their visits to this place has sparked the curiosity of the researcher. No scientific studies have been conducted yet based on this research curiosity. This aspect can be considered as the original contribution of the research. The research suggests that the phenomenon of madness is primarily a cultural phenomenon that varies according to time, place, and context. In fact, the meanings attributed to the phenomenon of madness are not independent of the social, cultural and religious values of the places where this research was carried out. The study was designed based on qualitative research methodology and the data collection technique used was interviews. Semi-structured interview forms were utilized during the interviews. The research sample consisted of tradesman around Kapu Mosque and Aziziye Mosque. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 20 tradesmen. The data obtained from the participants were categorized into two main themes and nine sub-themes, and analysed using content analysis technique. The findings reveal that the presence of mad individuals around Kapu and Aziziye mosques can be explained by the positive attitudes of the tradesman towards them. The main motivations influencing the tradesmens attitudes towards the mad have found to be predominantly rooted in religious and cultural values.
