Özet:

This study comprehensively examines the impact of everyday life experiences on the identity perceptions of married women living in family apartment buildings in Türkiye. It aims to understand how living in a family apartment building shapes these womens self-perceptions and social roles as a wife, mother, and daughter-in-law. Using purposive sampling, 20 married women between the ages of 28 and 55 from Istanbul, Bursa, and Ankara were selected for in-depth interviews. Employing a phenomenological design, data were collected from participants using a socio-demographic information form and a semi-structured interview form. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed through content analysis. The analysis revealed three main themes: the family apartment experience, the impact of social relationships on daily life, and dominant roles within social identity. Findings indicate that living in a family apartment strongly influences womens social identity perceptions. For instance, the daily roles of mothers largely revolve around motherhood, although in some cases, the role of daughter-in-law becomes more prominent. While participants benefit from social support and solidarity in the family apartment building, they also face challenges regarding individual freedom and autonomy. These findings highlight how women in family apartment buildings strive to balance their societal roles and personal identities, revealing the multi-layered and dynamic nature of life in family apartments. The study aims to contribute to the literature by shedding light on how family apartment buildings play a role in shaping womens social identity formation processes.
