Özet:

Silkworm, Bombyx mori, is an insect used to benefit from its product. Silk, which is an important raw material in the textile sector, obtained from pupae formed by the mature larvae of the silkworm. The aim of this study is to raise awareness of the science and scientific activities by using silkworm as a model insect within the scope of introducing and popularizing insects to 12 year old students. Within the program of 4004 Nature Education and Science Schools projects finacially supported by TÜBİTAK, Summer Science Camp-2015 was held by Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University in Çanakkale with the participation of students at the age of 12. Within the scope of the event subtitled as The World of Butterflies in this extensive educational project, a questionnaire was applied after oral and practical training sections was given about insects and silkworms. A total of 120 students divided into three groups, 40 participated students in group I, 40 students in group II and 40 students in group III. The results were evaluated by SAS program. 80.00 of the students belonging to group I, 65.50 of the students in group II and 72.50 of the students group III stated that they had never seen a silkworm previously. In the question of when do you feed the silkworm, 67.50 of the students in group I, 87.50 of students in group II and 82.50 of student group III were answered correctly. The question about lenght of the silk produced by a silkworm cocoon, 85.00 of the group I, 82.50 of the group II and 82.50 of the group III students were given correct answers after the training. In addition, 67.50 of the students in group I, 62.50 of the students in group II and 65.00 of the students in group III stated that they thought of feeding silkworms when they went back to home after the camp. As a result of the study, the awareness of the students to nature and the environment are raised through introducing of the silkworm as a model insect and an environmental indicator.
