Özet:

This study examines Pisa, one of the most influential maritime city-states of the Middle Ages. It focuses on how Pisa, initially an ordinary town in central Italy, gradually developed through its expanding activities in the Mediterranean. Once a modest settlement, Pisa first transformed into a commune. Despite its limited territorial size, it succeeded in dominating Mediterranean trade by the 12th century. This achievement was realized through a combination of military action, diplomacy, and commercial enterprise.Pisa pursued these endeavors without religious discrimination and attained considerable success. The wealth it accumulated through trade was channeled into the development of its navy and army. These investments ushered in a golden age for both the city and its inhabitants, elevating Pisa to the ranks of the prominent Mediterranean powers. The Mediterranean itself had long served as the central hub of medieval trade. Italian city-states, by achieving significant successes in this region, amassed great wealth and showcased their prosperity by transforming towns into thriving urban centers.By the end of the 12th century, however, Pisa began to lose its dominance, falling behind Venice and Genoa, particularly following the Fourth Crusade in 1204. Although Pisa made several attempts to regain and expand its influence in the Mediterranean, it was ultimately unable to replicate its former successes. Nonetheless, its determination persisted until the Battle of Meloria against Genoa in 1284.
