Özet:

Children frequently appear as subjects across a wide spectrum of news content, ranging from politics to entertainment, sports, and crime reporting. News stories involving children regardless of genre often raise significant ethical concerns. In particular, crime and court news, commonly referred to as third-page news in the Turkish media context, sometimes include graphic reports of violence such as murder and sexual assault, where children are portrayed as victims. One of the most widely debated cases in recent years is the murder of Narin Güran, which attracted considerable public attention and dominated the media agenda in Turkey for an extended period. This study aims to examine the ethical violations in the news reporting of child murder cases, focusing specifically on the media coverage of the Narin Güran case as it appeared on online news platforms. To this end, 268 news articles published on the three most-clicked news websites between September 8 and 15, 2024, were analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that the coverage included detailed descriptions of how and where the murder occurred, openly disclosed the identity and photographs of the victim and her relatives, sensationalized the crime, and predominantly featured statements by politicians, which included speculative commentary and unverified information about the case. These results indicate a clear breach of journalistic ethics in the reporting of the Narin Güran case.
