Özet:

Chests have been utilised for various purposes from the past to the present. Produced in different sizes and materials, they stand out for both their functional and aesthetic qualities. The use of chests has a long history and a significant place in Turkish culture, as well. In general terms, a chest can be defined as a piece of furniture in the shape of a rectangular prism, which has a lid that opens from the top and is used for storing belongings. It is observed that chests have been widely used as storage furniture in traditional Turkish houses. Another significant use of chests, which constitutes the main focus of this study, is their use as a dowry chest. Within the scope of this study, illustrated chest examples, which constituted the majority of dowry chests in the Güney district and were once a fashionable trend, have been examined. Since the chests exhibit uniformity in form, they have been categorised based on their ornamental features. Accordingly, the illustrated chests of Denizlis Güney district have been classified into three categories: still-life chests, chests with animal figures, and chests with architectural depictions. These ornaments were created using a printing technique on metal plates of various sizes. Although the tradition of dowries and dowry chests in the Denizli Güney region, of which the examples constitute our study subject, it has lost its former significance over time. Nevertheless, these dowry chests hold artistic value, as they reflect a particular periods aesthetic preferences and fashion trends.
