Özet:

Jalāl al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr al-Suyūṭī d. 9111505 was one of the most prominent scholars of his time. Born in Egypt during the Mamluk period, he was introduced to the religious sciences at an early age and received extensive education in various fields, including Arabic language and literature, jurisprudence fiqh, exegesis tafsīr, and hadith. His scholarly activities extended far beyond formal study: he authored numerous works and trained many students. Among his significant contributions to Arabic linguistics is al-Bahjat al-Mardiyya, his commentary on Ibn Māliks didactic poem Alfiyya. Al-Suyūṭī became familiar with Alfiyya in his youth, studying and memorizing it. Since the poems highly concise and sometimes ambiguous nature was intended to aid rapid acquisition of grammar rules, it generated a tradition of commentaries. Al-Suyūṭī wrote al-Bahjat al-Mardiyya with the aim of producing a comprehensive and accessible explanation of the work. His commentary clarifies obscure or difficult passages in Alfiyya, while following its original structure, covering both morphology ṣarf and syntax naḥw. Al-Suyūṭī defines many rules mentioned by Ibn Mālik, engages with earlier grammatical scholarship, and discusses differing opinions among grammarians. He defends the practice of citing previous scholars as a reflection of scholarly richness, not plagiarism. To maintain the integrity of Alfiyya, he presents supplementary information under separate headings rather than incorporating it directly into the main commentary. He also supports widely accepted grammatical rules with evidence from various scholars and schools of thought, offering a rich collection of textual proofs istishhād. Employing the mamzūj interwoven commentary method, he closely integrates the original text with his explanations. His language is marked by eloquence and literary sophistication, enriched with rhetorical devices such as iṭnāb amplification, talmīḥ allusion, sajʿ rhymed prose, istiḥdām repetition, and majāz figurative language. This study analyzes the methodology followed by al-Suyūṭī through a close reading of his work. It also compares his approach to those of other commentaries on Alfiyya, including the sources he references, to better understand the distinctive features of his exegetical style.
