Özet:

Menemen has been an important settlement both the Ottoman and Republican periods due to its location close to the center of Izmir. It is also one of the important settlements reflecting the educational architectural characteristics of Izmirs periphery. With the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey, a modernization process began in various fields, including education, leading to architectural changes in educational buildings. This study aims to identify the architectural transformations in educational structures during this transitional period, by examining educational buildings constructed in Menemen from the late 19th century to the 1970s. In this context, four educational buildings Şehit Kemal Primary School, Tevfik Fikret Primary School, Kubilay Primary School, and Menemen Secondary School, which were built in different periods and still retain their original functions, were analyzed in terms of their structural and architectural features. The research methodology includes a historical perspective incorporating literature review, archival research, fieldwork, and documentation studies. Historical aerial photographs, architectural drawings, cadastral maps, old photographs, and documents obtained primarily from the Menemen City Archive Museum were used as the main data sources for this study. The historical development, current physical conditions, site plans, architectural characteristics, and construction systems of the examined buildings were analyzed. The findings revealed significant differences in the location, size, and form of the buildings depending on educational policies, societal needs, and the architectural approach of the periods.
