Özet:

H-index, which is a metric used in assessing academicians, has been well received in the world as well as in Türkiye. H-indices computed by various academic data providers may be different because the databases they cover are not the same. This study aims to investigate the factors affecting the difference between the h-indices of two most commonly used data providers, namely Google Scholar and Web of Science. For this purpose, 475 faculty members Google Scholar and Web of Science h-indices from 48 state universities industrial engineering departments in Türkiye have been analyzed by using regression and analysis of variance. Google Scholar h-index is almost always greater than or equal to that of Web of Science, and the relative difference in between tends to increase as ones Web of Science h-index decreases. Moreover, as the departments minimum admission score decreases in the university entrance exam, its facultys average h-index tends to decrease whereas the aforementioned relative difference tends to increase. Based on research findings, suggestions are made regarding h-index usage in academic evaluations.
