Özet:

In this article, the main features of Spinozas theory of democracy are analysed through a comparative approach. In doing so, by addressing the disagreement between Spinoza and Hobbes, it is aimed to reveal the diversity of approaches to equality in the early modern period and the extent to which Spinozas theory represents a model against the liberalism-influenced understanding of equality of modernity. In the article, similar aspects of Hobbes and Spinozas contract theories are mentioned. Then, in line with the aim of the article, the differences between Hobbesian individualism and Spinozas interindividualism are focussed on and the social contract theories and conceptions of equality of these two early modern thinkers are discussed. It is concluded that Spinozian relational other-individualism involves the ontological interdependence of things, powers and authorities in political theory, and therefore, it harbours a completely different understanding of equality compared to Hobbes understanding of the autonomous subject. With this inference, it is concluded that Spinozas theory can be accepted as a model against Hobbesian individualism for the reasons discussed and obtained within the scope of the article, and that in Spinozas understanding of transindividual politics, freedom, equality and diversity are not mutually exclusive concepts, but aspects of one and the same process in which multiplicity becomes common.
