Özet:

Important political and economic developments took place in Europe at the end of the 19th century and as a result of this the daily flow of life changed necessarily. The spatial change that emerged with the start of migration to cities after the industrial revolution brought social degeneration, individual isolation and dissatisfaction with it. The reasons for this are difficult working conditions, financial difficulties and the well-known social problems that everyday life brings with it when getting used to city life. In addition to the modernization process, pessimism and fear added to the problems of the First World War. These elements, which naturally spread to the public consciousness, were also the subject of works of art. The silent film "Berlin. Symphony of a Big City" (Berlin. Die Sinfonie der Großstadt) directed by Walther Ruttmann in 1927 is an important example in terms of drawing the portrait of Germany and the German people in the 20s. In the film, the director, while conveying the hectic rhythm of the metropolitan city to the audience, made Berlin a symbol of modernity on the other hand. He conveyed this to the big screen with the footage he took from the earliest hours in Berlin to the darkest moments of the night. The film, shot in black and white, is a reflection of the period as it reveals the daily flow of the city. The aim of this study is to reveal how and in what way the structure of the city is depicted within 24 hours in the film, which is a visual media tool, while examining Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century.
