Özet:

Paul Celan Antschel 19201970, widely recognized as one of the most significant poets of 20th-century German literature, deeply engages with the impact of the Holocaust and World War II in his works through the use of symbolic expression. As a Jewish poet, Celan not only conveys the broader historical context in his writings but also articulates both his personal experiences and the suffering his family endured during this period, particularly through poetry characterized by dense imagery and intricate wordplay. His poem Todesfuge Death Fugue addresses the inhumane atrocities of the Holocaust with an intensely symbolic language, referencing historical realities. Todesfuge, regarded as one of the most significant works of Holocaust and post-war literature, is recognized as the first poem to intertwine the systematic persecution, massacres, and torture inflicted upon Jews in concentration camps with the motifs of music and dance. In music, particularly during the Baroque period, the fugue- a polyphonic musical form in which a central theme is imitated and developed across multiple voices- was elevated to its highest level by master composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach. Within its historical context, Todesfuge is examined in this study with a particular focus on the Nazi regimes systematic extermination of the Jewish people.
