Özet:

Death is a sociological phenomenon that is seen in every society and has different approaches according to belief systems. The uncertainty of the process after death has caused societies to develop different practices regarding death rituals. In traditional closed societies where primary relationships are dominant, condolences have become an important ritual. In the Covid-19 pandemic that emerged in 2019, all activities and formations of crowded groups that pose a risk to public health were banned within the scope of health measures. This situation also interrupted the organisation of condolence rituals. This study focuses on how the phenomenon of death and mourning processes affect social relations and social life and how the meaning attributed to the condolence tradition has changed with this process in the city of Van, which shows traditional closed society characteristics and where condolences are an important value. In this context, in this qualitative study, face-to-face interviews were conducted with a total of 30 people, 15 women and 15 men, most of whom were members of a tribe, who lost their first-degree relatives due to the epidemic. The results of the research revealed that the organisation formed by socio-cultural ties developed a resistance against the epidemic despite its threats to public health and that condolence rituals continue to be social rituals that are thought to be applied in the mourning process, even under difficult conditions.
