Özet:

After Greece was established as an independent state, it aimed to expand its borders to regions it associated with Greek heritage by claiming rights over Byzantine culture and history. Indeed, this irredentist policy would provide the Greek state, confined to the southern Balkans, with new commercial and strategic locations, while also uniting the dispersed Greek nation to achieve the goal of a Greater Greece. In this context, World War I was seen as an opportunity to implement this expansionist ideology and policy. The Ottoman Empire joined the war on the side of the Central Powers in 1914. Greece, on the other hand, joined the opposing bloc and officially entered the war on the side of the Allied Powers in 1917. Greeces involvement in the war allowed it to present its claims at the Paris Conference. As a result of the power struggle among the Allied Powers, Greece was authorized to occupy İzmir and its surroundings to prevent Italy from gaining strength in the Mediterranean. The Greek campaign in Asia Minor which began with the ideologically driven occupation of İzmir by Greece on May 15, 1919, encountered the Turkish national movement led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha and resulted in a major defeat for Greece. This period was closely followed by Amaltheia, one of the oldest Greek newspapers in İzmir. The newspaper, which began publication in 1838, continued until 1923. In this study, it was examined how the Amaltheia Newspaper, evaluated the events taken place in Anatolia. In this context, notable articles and news throughout the Greek-Turkish war, Amaltheia covered the Asia Minor campaign, the Turkish national movement, Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the aspirations of the Greeks, the disagreements among the Allies, and the establishment of the final peace. Amaltheia supported Greeces Asia Minor campaign, becoming one of the significant voices of Venizelist propaganda in Anatolia. This article was prepared using Greek sources as well as Turkish archive documents and Turkish-foreign literature.
