Özet:

This study was conducted to examine animal welfare and breeder practices in farms with 10 heads and more cattle in Onikişubat districts of Kahramanmaraş province. The data were obtained by face-to-face survey with 100 owners selected according to the Simple Random Sampling method. In the study, it was determined that the average age and professional experience of the breeders were 42.0 years and 18.1 years, respectively, the number of cattle was 53.2 heads, the shelter capacity milking cow and lifespan were 37.5 heads and 12.7 years, respectively. It was determined that a high percentage 80.0 of the breeders were aware of animal welfare. In 74.0 of the farms, feed increase method was applied to protect the animals from cold stress. In order to protect the animals from heat stress, the rates of fan operation, cooling and window opening were 17.0, 45.0 and 38.0, respectively. The rate of septicemia vaccinationserum administration to cows and calves was 15.0 and 71.0, respectively. The proportion of farms that separated the cows to dry two months before the birth was determined as 80.0. Among the factors evaluated as negative in terms of animal welfare in the farms; it was determined that 35.0 of the holdings had slippery floors, 22.0 had burning eyes when entering the barn, 38.0 had inadequate ventilation, 21.0 had inadequate windows, 80.0 had equal number of sick and delivery stalls, and 36.0 had the location of the barn under the house. As a result, it was concluded that breeders are aware of animal welfare, but this awareness should be reflected in practice. There is a need for more observational studies on the subject.
