Özet:

Punch Magazine, which was founded in 1841, reflected the domestic and foreign policies of the United Kingdom to its readers in a humorous language, and included many countries and nations in international politics in its cartoons. The magazine also focused on the events that took place in Turkey during the War of Independence and shared various cartoons with its readers about the sides of the war according to the course of the war. Punch sometimes served as a propaganda tool for the United Kingdom, trying to shape British public opinion in line with the interests of the kingdom. In this respect, revealing Punchs presentation of the War of Independence is important in terms of shedding light on how the UK public opinion was sought to be shaped regarding Turkey during the War of Independence. The aim of the study was to reveal Punchs view of the war through the cartoons published during the War of Independence. The semiotic method was used in the study and the cartoons were analyzed through the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic concepts included in Charles William Morriss semiotic model. In the study, it was found that Punchs view of Turkey changed positively depending on the course of the War of Independence in Turkeys favor, but it was distant towards Greece. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the change in the United Kingdoms policy towards Turkey during the War of Independence was directly reflected in the cartoons of Punch Magazine.
