Özet:

In this study, the potential of the clay layers in the upper levels of the coal of Kışlaköy Open Pit in Afşin-Elbistan Lignite Basin, which is the largest lignite field of Turkey, to be used in the ceramic sector was investigated. XRF and XRD analyses, strength, colour analysis, viscosity limits, shrinkage analysis and water absorption porosity analyses were performed to determine the technical and physical characteristics of the clays. The clays have aluminium silica hydrate main structure and Fe2O3 values were found to be higher than normal. Thin leafy profillite layers were detected in the clay. 3 endothermic reactions with temperatures of 136oC, 524oC and 939oC, indicating dehydration, crystal water loss and phase transformations occurred in the formation of clays below 63 microns and montmorillonite composition. The total shrinkage value of the clays was 2.81 and the size was measured as 106.9 mm. Water absorption rate was 0.85, pH value was 7.9, viscosity was 100 ccsec, litre weight was 1320 gL and dry strength was 29.6 kgcm2. When all the data are evaluated together, it is concluded that AEL clays can be used in ceramics when impurities are removed.
