Özet:

In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, important developments took place in the name of social sciences. Social crises centered in Europe first spread to the great empires and intellectuals and scientists started to search for ways to overcome the crises. With the emergence of modern asabiyyas ideologies after the French Revolution, they started to search for ways to overcome social crises, especially in Europe and the Ottoman Empire. As a result of these searches, Ziya Gökalp saw sociology as a science to get rid of the crisis and pioneered the establishment of the sociology department in Istanbul in 1914. In addition to being the founder of sociology, he was also interested in another science. That was folklore. He pioneered the establishment of Turkish folklore in the Ottoman Empire one year before the establishment of the sociology department. He called this new science halkiyat as a name used for the first time. Halkiyat, also known as folkloreethnology, developed in the same period as sociology. The search for the origin of nationalism coincides with these periods. In addition to scientific concepts and theories, Gökalp brought up the issue that the culture of the people should be done in a scientific manner, and as a result, the idea was made concrete and established with the establishment of the Hars Department of the Ministry of Education in 1920. Gökalp accepted folklore as a sub-science of sociology. This study analyzes the reasons why Ziya Gökalp, the founder of both sciences, turned to Turkish folklore as a neglected subject in sociology and his contributions to this field. Key Concepts: Ziya Gökalp, Turkish folklore, folklore, social sciences in the Ottoman Empire.
