Özet:

The Ottoman Empire made various innovations and arrangements in the education system in the 19th century. The arrangements made by the state in the efforts to renew education were insufficient for various reasons and the efforts to renew education did not yield the desired results. This situation gave rise to the idea of innovation through private schools. Based on this idea, private schools started to be opened in the Ottoman geography. One of these schools was Şemsülmaârif Mektebi, which made a name for itself in the history of Turkish education. Şemsülmaârif Mektebi is an important institution both because it is one of the first private Muslim schools established in Istanbul and because its graduates include many people who played important roles in recent Turkish history. Most of the information about Şemsülmaârif Mektebi dates back to 1308 1891 and the information on the period before this date is very limited. Thanks to the Tevzî-i Mükâfât Cedveli of Şemsülmaârif Mektebi for the academic year of 1303 1885-1886, it is possible to access a lot of information such as the type and level of the school, the educational curriculum applied at the school, the names, number and gender of the students who succeeded in various fields at the school, the courses taken by the students, and the scoring system applied at the school. In this study, the Tevzî-i Mükâfât Cedveli of Şemsülmaârif Mektebi for the academic year of 1303 1885-1886 was translated into Latin letters, and various evaluations were made on rewarding in the Ottoman education system and Şemsülmaârif Mektebi based on the information in the cedvel.
