Özet:

Folk tales, which are one of the literary products of folk literature, are considered as one of the important literary genres in terms of reflecting the tradition, culture and social structure of a nation. These stories, which are a part of oral literature, undertake the task of being the historical and social memory of the culture to which they belong. Folk tales play an important role in transmitting the important events, wars, heroism, joys and sorrows of the society they belong to from generation to generation. In addition, such narratives provide experience transfer to young generations and support them with their educational and instructive aspects. New generations learn from these stories from an early age to learn from the parable, to distinguish between good and bad, right and wrong. As another function of folk tales, it is possible to say that these narratives also preserve some literary genres belonging to oral literature. Proverbs, idioms and folk sayings that constitute the oral cultural heritage of a nation are among these types. In this study, folk tales, which are part of the oral literature formed in Kuwait, one of the Arab countries, will be tried to be processed through the image of the sea. The elements affecting the social structure, value judgements and cultural identities of the Kuwaitis, who were a seafaring society before the discovery of oil in the Gulf and made their living by sailing and pearl fishing, will be examined through folk tales. In addition, Kuwaiti folk tales with the sea theme will be subjected to a general evaluation by comparing them with other folk tales under their influence.
