Abstract Biographical works do not contain any information about the life and age of Abu Tahir al-Turaysisī, a Mutazilite scholar. The authors extant work titled al-Mutashābih al-Qurān is a book of tafsīr on the subject of mutashābih verses and theological issues from a theological perspective. He criticises the Hashwiyya, Rafiza and Batiniyya schools for not accepting the philological method of interpretation of the Quran and defends the itizalī approach based on reason and linguistic analysis. According to al-Turaysisī, the basic principles that ensure the accuracy of the meaning in the tawīl are reason, the Qurān, the Sunnah, İjma consensus and Arabic language. Interpretations of the verse are presented to them; the tawil that are in accordance with them are accepted, while those that are not are rejected. It is obligatory to submit the tawil of verses to the mutawatir news. Turaysisī opposes the tawil of verses with ahād reports that contradict reason and verses and are inconsistent. Keywords: Quran, Tawil, Mutazilah, Abū Tahir al-Turaysisī, Mutashābih al-Quran.
