Özet:

From the outset, man aimed to protect himself from diseases and potential dangers and pursued the basic goal of living his life in a healthy way. In the pre-Islamic period, shamans who established a connection between the individual and the supernatural forces were consulted for the treatment of a disease. Along with Islam, ocaklı people assumed the duty of curing the disease and the practices were embedded in an Islamic identity. Similar to shamans, ocaklı people heal not only physical illnesses but also mental illnesses. The psychological suggestion made by the shamans is maintained by the ocaks. Ocaks also support the individual in eliminating the elements that cause fear. Although there are many factors lying at the root of fear, the most common ones are evil spirits. The individual resorts to fear ocaks as well as scientific medicine to be protected from evil spirits and to eliminate the destruction they have caused. In the article, the fear ocaks serving in Sandıközü and Akin Neighborhoods of Eskişehir Seyitgazi district are focused. The study data are based on field research carried out within the scope of the scientific research project between 2020 and 2022. The materials obtained by in-depth interviews and observation techniques from the fear ocaks in Eskişehir were taken as basis. In the evaluation, the fear ocaks continued to serve in the treatment of mental disorders. The ocak tradition, which is conveyed through the lineage by handing or permission, continues to function today. With the development of scientific medicine, the change in living conditions and the spread of life in the city center, there have been dissolutions in the structure of traditional practices. However, today, it is important for the continuity of the ocaks that traditional treatment methods are scientifically accepted as complementary medicine.
