Özet:

This study aims to determine how and how often elements that contribute to the process of national identity construction are used in the reading and listening texts in Secondary School Turkish Course Books. In the research where secondary school Turkish textbooks were examined in terms of national identity construction, document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The study material consists of secondary school Turkish textbooks that are deemed appropriate for use in the 2023-2024 academic year by the Ministry of National Education. Descriptive analysis technique was used to analyze the data. In the study, reading and listening texts in secondary school Turkish textbooks were examined according to the themes in the checklist. In the research, 32 themes in Secondary School Turkish Course Books and 160 texts in these themes were subjected to descriptive analysis. Meanwhile, the frequencies of the findings, the themes in the textbook, the titles of the text in which they are found, and which grade textbook they are in are listed. In addition, sentences containing the elements identified within the scope of the relevant theme were determined to be presented in the findings. The research, in which secondary school Turkish textbooks were examined in terms of national identity construction, was based on the themes of history, homeland, language, religion, moral and social values, tradition, art, geography, food culture and clothing, which are effective in the construction of national identity, as a result of the field research. The reading and listening texts in the textbooks were examined in terms of the elements within the scope of these themes. These elements were taken as basis in the checklist used in reviewing textbooks. In the study, reading and listening texts in secondary school Turkish textbooks were examined according to the themes in the checklist. At the end of the research, the elements that are effective in the construction of national identity were evaluated first according to their themes and then according to their frequency at the class level. Accordingly, it has been determined that the themes with the most intense elements of national identity are history, homeland, language, religion, moral and social values, tradition, art, geography, food culture and clothing, respectively. When these elements are examined according to their frequency of presence at grade level in secondary school Turkish textbooks, it is seen that the most intense emphasis is made in the 8th grade Turkish textbooks. Afterwards, there are 7th grade Turkish textbooks, followed by 6th grade and 5th grade Turkish textbooks, respectively. In other words, it has been determined that the construction of national identity is included in secondary school Turkish textbooks with an increasing trend every year, starting from the 5th grade. At the end of the research, suggestions were made for the inclusion of national identity elements in Turkish textbooks.
