Özet:

In the face of major events such as disasters, wars, epidemics or migration that deeply affect the society, people collectively show a greater tendency towards irrational reasoning, interpretations, and even beliefs that are far from reality, where the mind is completely disabled. During the pandemic that we have experienced in recent years and that has affected the whole world, many images and many scientific studies have been published, especially in digital media, that such stories and events that lack the reality of reason and logic have taken place among the society. Even if the events described do not have a counterpart in the ordinary course of life, it can be said that they have evolved into mythos with the disabling of reason in an environment of social chaos and therefore increase the power of belief. Acting with the instinct to believe, humans adjust their attitudes and behaviors according to this instinct. Therefore, believing in an event that has evolved into a mythos is considered sacred and the opposite is unthinkable. Earthquake disasters, which leave deep emotional and physical scars and wounds on society, are one of the most striking examples of an environment of chaos. Such an environment of chaos, where people are in a state of panic, where there is a great confusion, where it is almost imagined that a small apocalypse has broken out, was recently witnessed with the natural disaster known as the Kahramanmaraş-based earthquake on February 06, 2023. It is no coincidence that the narratives experienced or claimed to have been experienced in the earthquake, which had a great destructive power, and which were contrary to the ordinary flow of life, occurred in such an environment of chaos and, so to speak, a life market. In this context, this study will try to explain the causes, functions and timing of the narratives that emerged in such a chaotic environment from three different perspectives: folkloric, theological and psychological perspectives.
