Özet:

The concept of honour is defined together with many positive values such as morality, honesty and integrity for women and men. However, in our country, honour is identified with women. In this study, the understanding of honour is analysed through a Turkish sample. In the cross-sectional and descriptive study, volunteer participants from seven geographical regions, who were literate, aged 18 years and over, took part. Demographic Information Form and Honour Concept Attitude Scale for Women were used for the data. The findings of the study revealed that the participants understanding of womens honor was egalitarian and positive. However, it can be said that the traditional perspective continues to exist in terms of the understanding of honour. In the study, differences were found in the understanding of honour towards women according to age, gender, education level, marriage type, family type, perceived income level, city and region of residence. In conclusion, the problem of women and the view of women must be de-genderized and addressed on an egalitarian basis. For this reason, emphasis should be placed on womens ability to become individuals and realize themselves. In order for the understanding of honor for women to evolve in an egalitarian direction, education, economic power and being in working life are two very important factors in breaking this vicious circle. While education plays an important role in achieving gender equality and creating a more egalitarian intellectual structure in the perception of honor for women, economic power, which is one of the founding elements of the public sphere, is of critical importance for women to exist in society. More importantly, the common goal of all political and social movements that support the change of the understanding of honor regarding women in society and the empowerment of women should be to achieve a change in mentality on this issue.
