Özet:

Ottoman Empire embarked on a series of reform movements into effect in order to hold back its regression versus the West and brought out a whole new intelligentsia class that is much different than those traditionalised thinking/counselling classes in Ottoman Empire’s administration system. Even though this intelligentsia class, emerging in the late times of Ottoman Empire, provided contemporary ideas and opinions for the modernization of Ottoman, it could only find the opportunities to carry out its ideas and opinions with the foundation of the Republic. A part of this intelligentsia class, inherited to the Republic from Ottoman Empire, aimed to establish a secular state that transforms the society's social life style that is based on religion, by being the founders of the Republic regime and initiating movements of civilising and westernization. The new lifestyle, shaped by the Republic elitists, on the center of secularism, one of the fundamental principles of the Republic, followed a widening path that radiates. For this purpose, the Ictihad Journal, published by one of the pioneer names of Westernization movement, Dr. Abdullah Cevdet, contributed positive achievements & attainments to the establishment process of New Turkey, by publishing its ideas correspond to the Republic's ideology. The aim of this study is to examine the Ictihad Journal’s circle’s, also known as “Westerners'' within the literature, views on religious subjects, to observe the effect of Westerners’ effort for carrying out their civilising policies to Kemalism ideology and to contribute to the related literature review. As a method, a literature review about Abdullah Cevdet's, Ictihad Journal's other writers' and the era's intelligents' positivist ideas and opinions affecting the societal life is made. In addition, the views in Ictihad Journal about where the notion “religion” should stand, being one of the strongest dynamics of the society against the Westernization movements desired to be applied by the Westerners, are examined and analysed.
