Özet:

It is possible to evaluate historical sources, beliefs, values and moral understanding in the culture of societies as a whole. Within this integrity, many issues encountered in oral-written sources, traditions-customs and belief system attract attention. Therefore, these issues within belief systems and cultures are somehow wondered and examined by researchers. As a result of this examination, it is determined that animals found in nature have an important place in historical sources and folk cultures. While some of these animals are considered sacred in folk cultures, some are perceived as worthless beings. Birds, one of the animals considered sacred by societies, have certain meanings in folk narratives and belief systems. The owl, among the birds, is also attributed with some positive and negative meanings in folk cultures. In this respect, the reasons underlying these meanings attributed to the owl become a matter of curiosity. In this study, the basis of some meanings attributed to the owl will be determined and examined. In addition, the positive and negative meanings attributed to the owl in narratives such as mythology, legend, epic, fairy tale and folk beliefs will be emphasized and a conclusion will be reached.
