Özet:

The role of society and culture in an individuals learning and internalizing violence cannot be disregarded. Violence themes or expressions approving and supporting violence against women in oral literary products such as tales, jokes, proverbs, idioms, and folk songs may ensure the continuity of the domination of men over women. The oral transmission of such songs from the past to the present by word of mouth and frequent repetition of violence against women in their lyrics may cause violence against women to be taken for granted, normalized, and sustained. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine whether there are Muğla folk songs containing violence against women in their lyrics; if there are folk songs containing violence against women, to display what types of violence are uttered in such folk songs. This paper used qualitative content analysis to study Muğla folk songs, and in the Muğla folk songs under scrutiny, violence against women was determined. When the types of violence against women were examined, verbal, physical, emotional, sexual and symbolic violence against women in Muğla folk songs were found out, as well as femicide. The findings are significant as they may contribute to raising awareness about the descriptions and expressions of violence against women in folk songs and may form the basis for reconsideration of the cultural products containing violence against women to prevent violence against women.
