Özet:

Turks played an important role in the development of steppe culture. Turks were the first in history to domesticate the horse and utilize it for riding. The production of an array of tools through the melting of iron has elevated the significance of this metal in various contexts. The increased utilization of iron was a pivotal factor in the advancement of Steppe Turkish culture. The convergence of equestrian mobility, the strength of iron, and the tenacity of the Turk gave rise to a culture of speed, power, and dynamism. These elements were instrumental in the formation and evolution of the prominent Steppe Turkish empires. Among them the Scythians, HunXiong-nu and the Kök Türks are the most outstanding. Their societies had interconnected traditions. Prehistoric traditions can be studied through archaeological findings. Later, written documents provide significant information. It is highly observable that the Scythian traditions were inherited by the Huns and Kök Türks. Military traditions include hunting, sending an arrow, gathering a war assembly, making a parade, knotting the tail of a horse, etc. can be specified. Thanks to those traditions, we can learn more about the cultures of the afore-said societies. Besides, they make clear the very continuity of the traditions in the steppe societies However, a significant part of them is shared among the three social entities. Cultural continuity and prevalence in the steppe environment reveal the importance of military traditions. This study focuses on pre-war military traditions according to archaeological findings and written sources. Written sources are largely supported by archaeological findings. It is noteworthy that the information in domestic and foreign sources supports each other. All source data is evaluated in detail. Based on all the data, it is possible to say that an attempt is made to determine the continuity and prevalence of the mentioned traditions.
