Özet:

The Ottomans wars against the Safavids between 1578-1590 and against Austria between 1593-1606 triggered many transformations in the military and administrative organisation of the state. During the long wars, important changes had also occurred in the structure and management of the janissary corps. This study will contribute to the literature by analysing the role of the janissary ağas in the changes observed in the janissary corps. Firstly, the duties of the janissary ağas who did not participate in the Safavid campaigns will be explained. In the second section, it focuses on the role of the janissary ağas in increasing the number of janissaries due to the need for the soldiers on the fronts during the Safavid campaigns. It will be shown that the negligence of the janissary ağas to observe the conditions of admission to the janissary corps led to various problems in the structure of the corps and in the payment of the janissaries salaries. In the last section, the reasons for the janissary ağas joining the army at the head of the janissaries without the sultan from the Austrian campaigns onwards and being held responsible for duties they had not previously undertaken during the wars will be explained.
