Özet:

The demographic shift towards an aging society is a global phenomenon. Since the aging population growth directly affects a countrys total demand and therefore the countrys income level, its effects on the economy have been debated in recent years. In this respect, it is important to investigate the sustainability of this situation in EU countries with the fastest aging rate. In this context, the study aims to investigate in which direction the aging population affects economic growth in the European Union EU-27 countries for the period 1995-2023. Durbin-Hausman Durbin-H cointegration and Common Correlated Effects CCE cointegration estimator tests were used as methods. According to the panel-wide coefficient estimator test, the impact of the aging population on economic growth is statistically insignificant. Additionally, the relationship between the elderly population and economic growth presents different findings in country-based studies.
