Özet:

With the emergence of the new Turkish state after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, a new era started in Turkey-Russia relations. The previous conflictual relations left their place in cooperative relations as the two states are in need of themselves in the reconstruction period. As a matter of fact, Soviet Russia was one of the greatest supporters of the Turkish state during the war of independence and afterward. This trend continued in the 1920s and to some extent, in the 1930s. Yet the situation radically changed after the Second World War and during the whole Cold War period, the bilateral relations were characterized, in general, by mutual distrust and hostility, despite few cases of cooperation. After the end of the Cold War and the disintegration of the Soviet Union, on the other hand, another interesting era started in Turkey-Russia relations, characterized by a mix of cooperation and dispute. This article aims to summarize and discuss Turkish-Russian relations, focusing on the previous century, the period between 1923 and 2023. The two countrys relations will be handled based on three sub-periods, the 1923-1945 period, the Cold War period, and the post-Cold War period, in that order. Yet the main focus of the study will be the third period, the post-Cold War period, as that period reflects more recent and thus important developments. The strengths and weaknesses in bilateral relations, along with some reasonable projections for future relations, will also be addressed in concluding the study.
