Özet:

The spiral of silence theory, developed by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann to assess the influence of public opinion on individual decision-making processes, revolves around individuals observing societal ideas and opinions before expressing their own. Consequently, individuals, in order to avoid exclusion or feeling alienated, prefer to conform their expressed opinions to align with societal norms rather than expressing differing views. In both cases, public opinion dominates individual will, causing individuals to suffer silently as they conform, resulting in suppression of their ideas. This study employs the spiral of silence model, a communication theory, to conduct a content analysis of Cengiz Aytmatovs novel Mother Earth. Specifically, it examines the experiences of Tolgonay, the protagonist, and her daughter-in-law Aliman, focusing on their unexpressed emotions within their relationships, culminating in Tolgonays cathartic connection with the earth, portrayed as the mother figure. While numerous studies analyze Aytmatovs novel Mother Earth from various perspectives, interdisciplinary studies exploring the novel through the lens of the spiral of silence communication model are notably absent in existing literature, making this research remarkable. The study concludes that Tolgonay ultimately breaks free from the spiral of silence that had confined her for years, thanks to her connection with mother earth.
