Özet:

The figure of peacock that is seen in tiles and ceramics of the Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman period will be discussed in this article. The main focal point of our study will be the samples of peacock figures on tiles and ceramics in terms of design and composition as well as dealing the peacock with the symbolic point of view. Stylization features of the figure, relations in terms of design form and style has been revealed in similar and different aspects by being evaluated in comparison with the samples of the Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman period. Peacock has indicated beauty, nobility, brilliance and arrogance throughout the ages and have always been associated with rebirth, immortality, eternal life and heaven. Peacocks that had been acquired various symbolic expressions in different cultures and civilizations was representing the sacred animal of Hera which she loves more than everything in Greek mythology as an example as well as the pattern on its tail was representing the eyes of Argos. The angel that is the evil god in Yezidi faith was respected as the peacock and this bird was the symbol of the Byzantine empresses, national bird of India, the evi leye protector in China, bird of paradise in the Islamic world. The world of meaning of peacock shaped according to various cultures and belief systems was linked to eternal life and immortality during the Anatolian Seljuk period. But when time comes to the Ottoman period, the figure of peacock that was generally seen on ceramics lost its symbolic meaning and became to take part on the background as a part of combination together with different styles of that period unlike the period of the Anatolian Seljuk when it was a unique and single figure standing alone.
