Özet:

Düzce has hosted various civilizations throughout its rich history and has produced significant works in the field of water architecture. In particular, during the ancient period in Konuralp, aqueducts and cisterns were constructed for the transportation and storage of water, representing remarkable examples of water engineering in the region. During the Ottoman period, water-related structures such as fountains and baths were built to meet the publics water needs, while also serving as essential elements of social life and urban aesthetics. However, due to the regions geological location, frequent earthquakes and various natural disasters led to a significant decline in the number of fountains. Consequently, it has been determined that only a limited number of fountains have survived to the present day. As part of the study, surface surveys identified a total of six fountains in Düzce Merkez, Akçakoca, and Gümüşova. These structures, which have a simple appearance, reflect the characteristic features of village and neighborhood fountains. Some of the fountains, which were initially built as independent structures, have gradually transformed into wall fountains over time and have survived to the present day. Most of these fountains have a single-facade design, with only one exhibiting the characteristics of a square fountain. In this study, the aforementioned fountains were examined based on a detailed literature review and information obtained from local residents. Their architectural descriptions, plan and facade characteristics, decorative programs, materials, and construction techniques were first evaluated within their own context and then subjected to a comparative analysis with contemporary examples from the period. Additionally, the significance and position of these fountains within Ottoman architecture were emphasized.
