Özet:

The purpose of this article is to shed light on the emergence and development of the buldāniyya genre, which is one of the reflections of the scholarly journeys in the history of Islamic culture. Traveling has a great role in the formation and development of Islamic sciences. Scholarly journeys to cities, towns, or regions called riḥla provided muḥaddiths the opportunity to meet, negotiate with each other, and reach the knowledge they were trying to acquire. These journeys and meetings were reflected in the written works, and these journeys caused various kinds of works to be written during or after the journeys. One of the book genres that emerged as a result of these journeys is buldāniyya. In this genre, the narrations that have been heard from different generally forty cities and towns are brought together. This study claims that the genre of buldāniyya first emerged by adding city information to the works in the style of forty ḥadīth compilation, and additional features were added to the genre over time to add originality. In this context, from the 6th century to the 10th century, besides the emphasis on āli isnāds buldaniyyas are part of the forty ḥadīth genre. Over time, it has been observed that, rather than the number of ḥadīths, the difference in the names in isnāds, the cities where these ḥadīths were taken and the texts themselves becomes more prominent. In this study, three important buldaniyye works written by Silafī d. 5761180, his student Ibn ʿAsākir d. 5711176, and al-Sakhāwī d. 9021497 were compared and examined.
