Özet:

In the nineteenth century, the Ottoman geography underwent a process of rationalization in many areas. The conception of time at the center of everyday life was also rationalized in the nineteenth century. Time, which in the traditional Ottoman period depended on the repetition of cosmic natural phenomena, became independent of natural phenomena in the nineteenth century and was perceived in terms of mechanical clock units that were universal and synchronized, defined by abstract time. The modern conception of time, which was incorporated into daily life, changed social dynamics in the Ottoman Empire and built a new socio-cultural structure. Accordingly, the housing culture was also affected by this transformation and houses gained different meanings with the new conception of time. Salons played a very important role in the process of the modern conception of times inclusion, programming and rationalization of houses. Because the salon was the public face of the house, organized in the most appropriate style to the Western model, where a rational identity prevailed, and where individuals other than the residents of the house were hosted. And while it performed the function of hosting guests on certain days and times, it also had the potential to organize the rest of the house. As the routine of everyday life in the nineteenth century was redefined by the modern conception of time, this conception was at the center of almost every action that took place in the salon. With this in mind, this article intends to trace the modern conception of time through salons in houses and to reveal how this space, which was still new to Istanbulites, played a role in the construction of this conception.

On dokuzuncu yüzyılda, Osmanlı coğrafyası pek çok alanda bir rasyonelleşme sürecinden geçer. Gündelik hayatın merkezinde yer alan zaman kavrayışı da on dokuzuncu yüzyılda rasyonelleşir.
