Özet:

The portrayal of international migrant news in Western media has long been a topic of public debate. Among these discussions, issues of migrant differentiation and the use of double standards are prevalent. This study aims to explore how and with what perceptual representations Syrian and Ukrainian migrants, as recent examples of forced migration, are depicted in the British media and to examine the differences these perceptions create between the two migrant groups. Using popular geopolitics, the study critically analyzes news about Syrian and Ukrainian migrants from The Daily Express, a British newspaper selected due to its anti-immigrant stance. The findings are categorized into several aspects. The definition of the migration phenomenon to the UK by Syrian and Ukrainian migrants, the identity definitions of Syrian and Ukrainian migrants, the positioning of the UK in relation to Syrian and Ukrainian migrants, and finally, the required actions for Syrian and Ukrainian migrants. The results indicate that the Ukrainian identity is presented as closer and more deserving of assistance due to the presence of terms such as innocent, vulnerable, and genuine refugee to the British public. In contrast, the Syrian identity is often associated with concerns about the inability to adapt to Western values and the potential threat to British culture, as evidenced by the use of terms like attackers and suspicious.
