Özet:

This study aims to compare the language and literary style in the literary masterpiece Animal Farm by George Orwell, one of the leading figures of 20th century English literature, and in two different Turkish translations. For this purpose, it has been tried to reveal how the language and style of the source text are, how they are transferred to the target texts, whether the literary personality of the author is reflected in the translated texts, and which translation theories of Chesterman and Pym these translations serve as an example of. In this context, twenty-one text units selected from the source and target texts have been analyzed in the light of translation theories. In the study, the 8th edition of the original work published in 2003 with the original name Animal Farm by Longman Pearson Publishing House has been used as the source text. As the target texts, the 3rd edition of the book in 1998, translated by Leyla Moralı and first published by İnkılâp Publishing House in 1974, and the 42nd edition of the book in 2014, which was translated by Celâl Üster and first published by Can Publishing in 2001, have been used. The research model of the study consists of document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. As a result of the study, although figurative languages and metaphorical expressions are sometimes included in the novel, it is emphasized that a clear, direct and strong language is dominant in general. Moralı has remained faithful to the source text, tried to find the exact equivalent of a word said in the text as much as possible, and mainly produced translations that set an example for Pyms Natural Equivalence Theory. She has reflected the simplicity of the novel and the literary personality of the author to the translated text so much. On the other hand, Üster has preferred to convey the expressions in the source text not word for word, but with different words that overlap semantically, and mostly produced translations in accordance with Chestermans Convergent Similarity Theory. Therefore, it cannot be said that Üster has remained faithful to the language and style of the source text.
