Özet:

Oriental studies, which began in Russia during the tsarist period, have enabled a rich accumulation of knowledge to be gained in this field over time. In addition to scientists, researchers from various fields interested in this field also contribute to this accumulation. Among such researchers, it is clear that soldiers, who are sent to Central Asia and other regions where Turkic communities have lived, are also engaged in oriental studies. Although the officers of this group made observations that primarily served the military purposes of Tsarist Russia, from time to time they also provided information about the people and communities of the region, recorded legends or tales, and preferred to report on clothing and daily life of the people. A special place in this group, defined as military orientalists, is occupied by Nikolai Nikolaevich Karazin. His most basic trait is his versatile personality. In addition to being a military man, Karazin is also known as an ethnographer, artist and writer, and his work in these three different fields holds a special place in Oriental studies. Karazin, who originally arrived in Central Asia as a soldier, later took part in scientific circles as a researcher, because he knew the region and its people well, brought everyday life into art through the paintings he painted, and revealed the wealth of oral creativity and the culture of these lands with their collections. For this reason, the article will focus on Karazins life and his work in compiling the Karakalpak oral culture, as well as his way of demonstrating this cultural wealth in Russia.
