 The purpose of the study is to examine the modelling processes of pre-service elementary mathematics teachers regarding the Crop Insurance model-eliciting activity in the context of modelling competencies. The research design of this study is a case study in which a qualitative research method is adopted. Forty-six pre-service teachers, who were first-year students at the time of the study, were selected using the convenience sampling method as the participants. The data were collected through the Crop Insurance model-eliciting activity and the views about model-eliciting activity questionnaire developed by the researchers in accordance with the principles of model-eliciting activities. The data of the study were analysed by descriptive analysis method. Findings revealed that pre-service teachers generally showed a partially appropriate approach to understanding the real-world problem and creating a mathematical model. The pre-service teachers who solved the model they created with the correct mathematical operations also successfully interpreted the model. However, none of the pre-service teachers could show any approach in the verification step of the solution. Almost all pre-service teachers stated that they had not encountered modelling activities before, enjoyed the modelling activity process, and that more places should be given to modelling activities in their undergraduate studies and professional lives. Depending on the findings of the research, it is recommended to design environments in teacher education programs where more model-eliciting activities are used, similar to the crop insurance activity used in the present study.

 Bu çalışmanın amacı ilköğretim matematik öğretmeni adaylarının Bitkisel Ürün Sigortası modelleme etkinliğine ilişkin modelleme süreçlerinin modelleme yeterlikleri bağlamında incelenmesidir. Nitel araştırma yöntemi ile yürütülen araştırmanın deseni durum çalışması olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu uygun örneklem yöntemi ile seçilen 46 ilköğretim matematik öğretmeni adayı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri, araştırmacılar tarafından modelleme oluşturma etkinlikleri prensiplerine uygun olarak geliştirilen Bitkisel Ürün Sigortası modelleme etkinliği ve modelleme etkinliği görüş formu aracılığı ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin betimsel analiz yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Öğretmen adaylarının gerçek problemi anlama ve matematiksel model oluşturma basamaklarında genellikle kısmen uygun yaklaşım sergiledikleri belirlenmiştir. Oluşturdukları modeli doğru matematiksel işlemler ile çözen öğretmen adayların tamamının modeli yorumlama basamağında da başarılı oldukları görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte çözümü doğrulama basamağında hiçbir öğretmen adayı yaklaşım sergileyememiştir. Öğretmen adaylarının nerdeyse tamamının modelleme etkinlikleri daha önce karşılaşmadığı, modelleme etkinliği sürecinde keyif aldığı, lisans ve mesleki hayatlarında modelleme etkinliklerine daha fazla yer verilmesi gerekliliğini ifade etmişlerdir. Araştırma sonuçlarına bağlı olarak ilköğretim matematik öğretmen adaylarına lisans döneminde bitkisel ürün sigortası etkinliğine benzer daha fazla modelleme etkinliklerinin kullanacağı ortamların tasarlanması önerilebilir.
