İkinci bölümde, Orhan Pamuk'un ve Sabri Gürses'in roman üzerine görüşleri tartışılmıştır. Üçüncü bölüm Gürses'in iddiasını sorgulamak üzere üç ayrı çeviriden seçilen çeşitli tümcelerin karşılaştırmalı çeviri incelemesinden oluşmaktadır.

Abstract

This paper analyses three translations of ‘The White Nights' by Fedor Dostoyevsky in terms of certain translator's decisions. The translations are: Nihal Yalaza Taluy (1957), Mehmet Ozgul, foreword by Orhan Pamuk (2008) and Sabri Gurses (2009).  The starting point of the research is the claim of Gurses, made in the introduction to his own translation. According to this claim, in the previous translations, splitting the long and complex sentences of the original text into shorter ones led to ‘sentimentalization' and perception of the text as a pure melodrama from the perspective of the target reader.  In the first part of the paper we determine the position of the novel in the source culture based on the critical revues of the period and the notes of the author himself. In the second part we discuss the views of Gurses and Pamuk in order to display the target reader's perception. The third part includes the comparative analysis of the target sentence samples. The interview with Gurses and brief review of the translations of the 1950s-70s are used as an empirical data on the decision-making process.  As a result, it seems that some translators' decisions like dividing the long sentences and making certain word choices are highly motivated by the general cultural environment of the period. Gurses in his foreword and interview seems not to use ‘melodrama' as a strict literary term. On the other hand, his translation still might have opened the new dimensions of the novel to the target reader.
