Özet:

This study aims to examine the transformation of the concept of family privacy across generations. Based on the theoretical gap and need identified in the existing literature, the main problem of this study is to examine what the perceptions of family privacy are across different generations and how family privacy has been transformed in the intergenerational context. The study seeks to explore the socio-cultural differences in family privacy between generations and to understand the underlying social, cultural, religious, economic, technological, and other contextual factors driving this differentiation. A qualitative case study method and an embedded multiple case design were employed in this research. In this context, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 mother-daughter pairs, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that family privacy is not a fixed structure across generations; rather, it is continuously reconstructed in response to social, cultural, and technological transformations. In the mothers generation, privacy tends to be shaped by silence, control, and obedience, whereas among the younger generation, a more open, communication-based, and individual-centered understanding of privacy is prominent. Nonetheless, the study also shows that privacy continues to function as a regulatory element in family relationships and that certain normative boundaries persist across generations. By addressing both continuity and transformation, the research evaluates changes in family relationships from a multidimensional perspective. In this regard, the study contributes to the literature and aims to offer new perspectives for a deeper understanding of the interaction between family, gender, and the concept of privacy.
