Özet:

After the proclamation of the Republic, there was a period of recovery in the navy field, as in every field. Because, like many other areas, the navy was one of the ignored institutions during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. In order to revive the navy, the first ship that was requested to be made capable of warfare within the framework of the orders given by Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk himself was the Yavuz cruiser. As a result of intense efforts, Yavuz became capable of operating with the navy in 1930. The new goal was now to ensure that the Yavuz cruiser had access to the ability to conduct coordinated warfare with other surface and underwater ships in the navy. For this purpose, the navy began to conduct maneuvers almost every year. One of these maneuvers was carried out between 1 and 30 September 1938, in order for the navy and air forces to carry out a joint and coordinated operation. Sea of Marmara, North Aegean and Gulf of Izmir were determined as the military exercise areas. In the third phase of the military exercise, the first two phases of which were carried out successfully, the Yavuz cruiser experienced a marine accident. The accident occurred while the cruiser Yavuz was trying to leave the Gulf of Izmir for a sea maneuver on 27 September 1938. The ship had just started sailing to leave the gulf, but at 09:22 it collided with a shipwreck not shown on the maps, causing minor damage to its underwater hull. In this study, after explaining the activities and technical features of the Yavuz cruiser in the Turkish Navy, the maritime accident and the developments after the accident are discussed.
